Soho House to open first US country retreat in New York’s Hudson Valley

Soho House

A members-only British brand is coming for upstate New York.

Two decades after coming to America, the UK-born private club Soho House — which celebrated its anniversary this week at its New York City location with a party and an intimate poolside musical performance by Lauryn Hill — has announced plans for its first countryside retreat in the US. It’s one of 20 new locations Soho House aims to open by 2025.

The bucolic but exclusive new venue will be in the posh Hudson Valley town of Rhinebeck, New York.

Soho House Rhinebeck, formally named Grasmere House, will be set on the historic Grasmere estate, a 250-acre former working farm.

An opening date has not yet been announced but, once complete, Soho House promises the facility will “blend the balance of nature and experience with restored 19th-century buildings anchored by a historic manor house,” and, in addition to lodgings, will offer amenities including “various food and drink outlets, plus hiking, cycling, and spa and wellness offerings.”

As for the design, it will “reference the romanticism of the nearby woodlands and incorporate natural elements from the historic Roycrofters arts & crafts movement in the 1800s,” according to press materials.

Since opening its first American location in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District back in 2003, Soho House has opened 14 other clubs in eight other US cities, a small portion of its 40 clubs globally.

While not all the in-the-works clubs have been revealed yet, they’ll be located in the UK, Latin America and North America. Soho House Mexico City is set to open this month, Soho House Portland and Sao Paulo are slated to open later this year — and Soho House Charleston is slated to debut in 2024.

“We’re going to grow in New York and LA, there’s a lot more opportunity there for us, but we see a big opportunity to grow across North America,” Soho House & Co. chief executive officer Andrew Carnie told Bloomberg earlier this month. “There’s a lot of thriving cities in America now, especially post-Covid where a lot of folks moved out of New York and LA, that are brilliantly suited for a Soho House.”
