We at Airbnb are committed to supporting responsible tourism and contributing to local communities. In New Orleans, one way we do this is by collecting and remitting tourism taxes on behalf of our Hosts. In 2022, Airbnb collected and remitted approximately $23 million in tourism taxes in New Orleans.
Taxes are an important source of revenue for cities like New Orleans and help fund vital services such as infrastructure improvements, public safety, and cultural preservation. In fact, the tourism industry is a significant driver of the New Orleans economy, accounting for over $10 billion in economic activity and supporting nearly 100,000 jobs in 20191.
We are proud of our contributions to the New Orleans community and recognize the important role that tourism taxes play in supporting local businesses and ensuring that the city remains a vibrant and thriving destination for visitors.
At the same time, we also recognize the importance of responsible hosting practices and the need to protect the interests of both Hosts and visitors. We are committed to working with local authorities to develop policies and regulations that promote responsible hosting, ensure the safety and well-being of guests, and address concerns around housing affordability and neighborhood preservation.
In addition to collecting and remitting tourism taxes, Airbnb also works to educate Hosts and guests about responsible hosting practices and encourages them to be good neighbors and respectful members of the community.
Supporting fair and balance regulations
The vast majority of Hosts in New Orleans share just the home one to keep up with the rising cost of living2, and since 2019, Airbnb has worked with city leaders to take down bad actors and illegal listings on the platform. As the City develops new short-term rental rules we urge them to stand by local residents and protect their right to share their home, instead of pitting neighbors against each other with overly restrictive regulations. As the tourism industry continues to grow and evolve, it is important that we all work together to ensure that it benefits both visitors and local residents. By collecting and remitting tourism taxes, promoting responsible hosting practices, and supporting the New Orleans community, Airbnb is proud to be a part of this effort.
