Stately townhouse in a gated-off NYC historic district seeks $3.37M

Stately

Even among Harlem’s most stately properties, this yellow brick and limestone townhouse stands out as one of an inimitable group of homes that compose a lesser-known Manhattan sub-neighborhood.

Currently on the market for $3.375 million, the five-story townhouse at 215 W. 138th St. belongs to a historic stretch of properties on two gated-off streets officially known as the St. Nicholas Historic District, but more often referred to as Strivers’ Row. And on it, according to Zillow, there are two other homes now for sale and two others for rent — meaning it’s a prime time to grab a home in a low-key corner within the big city grid.

The area’s stately row houses were built by three different elite architecture firms in the late 1800s as part of what was initially known as the King Model Houses looking to appeal to wealthy white buyers — with amenities that originally included shared rear stables, and being enclosed within carriage gates inscribed with a reminder to “walk your horses,” according to Untapped Cities.

As a result of societal financial troubles and white flight from the neighborhood, the homes were a flop until 1919, when their financier agreed to sell them to African Americans at $8,000 a house, and the enclave soon became one of Harlem’s most distinguished corners.

Today, the carriage gates remain, but the stables have been converted to parking — No. 215 comes with a two-car garage.

In addition to the historic architectural details and the epic New York luxury of having a garage, “The community is very welcoming,” Compass’s Charlie Lewis, who holds the listing, told The Post of the area’s friendly nature. During the summer, he added, residents often host house tours and their kids “will get together and sell things in front of their homes.”

As well, “the blocks are extremely clean due to the fact that garbage is collected in the back.”

Inside the residence, highlights include the parlor level’s grand foyer, a sitting room and an adjoining bar, a fireplace-equipped kitchen, and restored tiger oak woodwork and oak floors throughout.

The upper floors contain the home’s five bedrooms, including the primary suite with its extensive closet space and an ensuite bath with a 6-foot double sink vanity — one of four bathrooms total. There’s also a laundry room.

On the lower levels of the home, there is a “self-contained garden duplex,” which could be used for additional rental income, the listing notes.
