Ahoy there, adventure seekers!
Get ready to drop anchor at this 1-acre property in Redlands, CA. With a “nautical-inspired theme” inside and out, this playful abode just splashed onto the market for $1.2 million.
From a sea captain statue (with peg leg!) — ready to greet guests — to an interior covered with fishing nets, this Fantasy Island-meets-retro-pad listing serves up surprises at every turn.
“If you have been to Disneyland before, it kind of reminds me of going from one village to another,” says listing agent Jan Hudson, of Hudson Realty, noting that there is also a “Japanese garden and a Polynesian-style area.”
She adds that the single-level dwelling was custom built in the 1977 for the sellers, who were the property’s only owners.
“The husband of the home recently passed away,” Hudson shares.
While much of the decor hails from the disco era, some of the rooms have been updated — including two of the bathrooms and the kitchen.
At first glance, this single-level home exudes a midcentury vibe, courtesy of its vaulted ceilings and oversized glass windows. But along with its undeniable kitsch, there is also peace and quiet here.
“The gated driveway makes you feel like you are in your own little area,” Hudson notes. “When you take a curve up the driveway, there are areas with benches that you can go sit out in nature; and there’s a waterfall.”
‘An adventure’ living here
This 2,458-square-foot residence is surrounded by eye-popping “vignettes,” including “themed” outbuildings.
“Kids love the place,” Hudson says. “There is an area of the koi pond that has a tunnel that leads to the Japanese gardens. It’s really an adventure living here and brings out the kid in us adults.”
Other interesting decor scattered throughout the property includes the helm and anchor of a ship, wall murals, fish hanging from ceilings, and a hallway designed to replicate a covered bridge.
Each of the three bedrooms has sliding-glass doors that lead to the backyard. The property also boasts a three-car garage and plenty of extra storage space.
Hudson speculates the buyer will be someone willing to maintain the home’s unique vibe.
“It’s going to take a special buyer who wants to keep up this property,” she says. “They will enjoy all of the different themes the home has to offer.”
She notes that the fanciful listing could work as a primary or secondary home.
“It’s an estate sale, and the mom and dad who built the home have both passed,” she says. “Their adult child grew up there, and they used it as a family home. The quality is there. It’s more about making it your own. It is just a fabulous, entertaining home.”
