Public schools for thee, but not for me.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is moving his family from Sacramento to ritzy Marin County so that his oldest daughter can attend a posh private school where tuition tops a staggering $60,000 a year, Politico reports.
Newsom, a prominent Democrat and potential future presidential candidate, will continue to reside part-time in California’s capital with his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
The Newsom’s four children will reportedly live with extended family members in Marin — across the Golden Gate Strait from San Francisco.
Come fall, oldest daughter, Montana, 14, will begin classes at The Branson School, an insider told the publication.
The elite academic institution enrolls 370 students, and boasts an array of notable alumni, including Julia Child, Edie Sedgwick and Siebel Newsom herself.
Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, confirmed the relocation to Politico, but didn’t disclose which school Montana would be attending.
“To ensure continuity in their children’s education, the family will split their time between Sacramento and Marin heading into the coming academic year,” the spokesperson said.
The Newsoms currently own a six-bedroom mansion in Sacramento estimated to be worth $4.5 million, per Zillow.
Siebel Newsom grew up in Marin County, one of the nation’s wealthiest communities.
The elite Branson School is nestled in Ross, where the median household income hits $250,000 and home prices average $1.6 million—double the state’s median of just over $400,000.
In addition to Montana, the Newsoms have three other children: Hunter, Brooklyn, and Dutch. In May, Siebel Newsom revealed that one of their kids had to be pulled from school due to bullying.
This relocation fuels speculation about Newsom’s political ambitions beyond his gubernatorial term, which ends in 2027.
On Tuesday, he hinted at his future plans in a pre-recorded State of the State address, drawing comparisons between 2024 and 1939, the year before World War II erupted as fascism loomed.
Newsom, who remains a top contender for the 2028 presidential race, had been rumored to replace President Joe Biden but quashed those talks, opting instead to act as a campaign surrogate. His first major campaign appearance is slated for the presidential debate in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday night.
Newsom came under fire from Californians during the COVID pandemic.
The governor imposed a school mask mandate while Montana and Hunter attended a maskless basketball camp.
He claimed he “missed” the email stating the camp’s no-mask policy.
Adding to the double standard accusations, he was busted dining maskless at the high-end French Laundry restaurant during lockdown.
