Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge is resigning, effective March 22.
Fudge represented Ohio’s 11th Congressional District from November 2008 until her confirmation at HUD secretary in March 2021. In a statement, President Biden praised Fudge, declaring that “over the past three years she has been a strong voice for expanding efforts to build generational wealth through homeownership and lowering costs and promoting fairness for America’s renters.”
HUD Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman will serve as acting secretary after Fudge’s departure. The White House did not state if it would nominate a replacement.
The 71-year-old Fudge told USA Today that she is retiring from politics, declaring, “Don’t look for me to ever be on another ballot or another appointee or anything like that. I really do look forward to being a private citizen.”
Fudge is one of the very few Biden cabinet members to leave their jobs – Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and Eric Lander, the director of the White House’s Office of Science and Technology, were the only other officers to step away from the administration since their 2021 confirmations.
