Fruit spread-famous Smucker family to auction off home in iconic NYC building

Smucker family

This is sweet!

The fruit spread-famous Smucker family is auctioning one of its Plaza Hotel condos — a one-bedroom, one-bath pied-à-terre with a terrace, which is rare for the famed Central Park-facing building.

Tim and Jenny Smucker, the eighth generation of the jammy family, is the fourth generation to run the Ohio-based J.M. Smucker Company, which was founded in 1897.

While the Smuckers are keeping a larger unit at the Plaza, the one-bedroom condo will be auctioned to the highest bidder on Jan. 3 with no reserve price, which means the seller will accept the final bid — subject to first right of refusal and approval by the condo board.

The unit, No. 508, is 782 square feet and comes with a 522-square-foot terrace. Facing the Plaza’s courtyard fountain and gardens, the condo comes with details like herringbone wood floors, crown moldings and a kitchen.

It’s adjacent to the Astor Suite, No. 509, which John Jacob Astor, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Pres. John F. Kennedy, ex-Facebook president Sean Parker and Esprit founder Jürgen Friedrich have all called home. Before the Smuckers bought it, the condo had been used as a guest or staff home for a series of Astor Suite owners. Both 508 and 509 were designed by S.R. Gambrel, an AD100 interior designer, who hired some of the same artisans that helped restore Windsor Castle in England.

The Smuckers hired an Ohio company, Kiko Auctions — which also sells a lot of tractors — to handle the auction. They bought the condo as a pied-à-terre for $2.95 million in 2021, and loved the building so much that they bought a larger unit there.

Amenities include concierge and butler service, 24-hour in-room dining and twice-daily housekeeping services.

Eileen McGill of Elegran Forbes Global Properties is the listing broker with Peter R. Kiko of Kiko Auctions.
