As part of our continued commitment to athletes across the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, Airbnb announced the fourth edition of the Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant, in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
Starting today, Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls can apply for a USD $2,000 travel grant to use for accommodations while training, qualifying or other needs. In total, 1,000 athletes will receive the travel grant.
Since its launch in 2021, the Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant has offered 2,000 athletes a USD $2,000 travel grant to use exclusively on airbnb.com as they travel, train and compete distributing 4 million dollars.
With Paris 2024 in mind, we’re seeing an uptick in demand for this programme. In 2023, the number of applications grew by over 40% and 2 million dollars were distributed to 1,000 Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls from 166 countries and 91 sports (Olympic & Paralympic), with equal distribution to male and female athletes.
“Not all athletes start with the same opportunities, and this program is a much-needed boost for many of them. We are proud to support this programme, which will enable 1,000 recipients this year to practice where they want, perform and compete at their best, and pursue their dreams! This new edition is also being launched earlier than initially planned to meet the needs of athletes who will compete at Paris 2024!”
Bertrand Burdet, Deputy Director, Airbnb France
“The IOC is delighted to see Airbnb’s continued and strong commitment to support athletes, especially as they enter the final stretch of preparations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. The Airbnb Athlete Travel Grants are the perfect example of a successful collaboration between a Worldwide Olympic Partner and IOC, drawing on the expertise and services of Airbnb to meet the needs of the athlete community. It is no surprise to see how extremely popular the programme has been with athletes all over the world.”
Kaveh Mehrabi, IOC, Director of the Athletes’ department
“In September 2020, I underwent surgery to continue practicing my sport at a high level. The Airbnb Travel Grant made it easier for me to recover by avoiding the trips between Bordeaux, where I was doing my rehab, and Lille, where I live. Above all, I was able to spend this time with my family, who traveled with me wherever I went. Airbnb is a type of accommodation that I particularly appreciate as an athlete: I can choose homes that offer sports equipment and a fully-equipped kitchen, which allows me to prepare my own meals. This is optimal in my physical preparation, especially in view of the upcoming Olympic Games!”
Viktor Lockwood, International Hockey Player
