The Most Expensive ZIP Code Is…

Most Expensive ZIP Code

Atherton, California, has less than 7,200 residents but more super-expensive homes than any other U.S. locality, according to PropertyShark’s 2023 listing of the nation’s most expensive ZIP Code.

Atherton’s 94027 ZIP Code saw a 2023 median home sale price of $8.3 million, up 5% from one year ago. PropertyShark noted the locality’s line-up of tech billionaires and venture capitalists as residents and a zoning law limiting housing to single-family homes with a one-acre minimum lot as contributing to this position.

On the other side of the country, the 11962 Zip Code in Sagaponack, New York, recorded a 2023 median home sale price of $8.07 million – PropertyShark said this marked the first time since it tracking data that the top two entries surpassed $8 million – with the first place nearly doubling the $4.25 million median of the 10th spot.

Rounding out the top five localities with the most expensive ZIP Codes was Miami Beach (33109), with a median home sale price in 2023 of $5.5 million, and two exclusive California communities: Santa Barbara (93108) at $5 million and Beverly Hills (90210, of course) at $4.8 million.

“California continues to hold its position as the most expensive state in the U.S. for homebuying,” said PropertyShark in its data report. “In fact, a total of 79 of the priciest zip codes can be found within the Golden State, including seven of the top 10 most expensive. As usual, New York came in second with 22 entries, representing 18% of the wealthiest ZIP codes in the U.S.”
